Sunburnt Road

Momma I don’t wanna walk in blind.
You always told me I’d get mine.
Your revenge means I understand
What it takes to love this man.

I was born in the river
At the end of the Sunburnt Road
Never took me for a quitter
But I’d packed before the roosters crowed
Waved goodbye to the winter, and
Motored down that Sunburnt Road.

Had a dream of the river
Standin' barefoot on the red clay roads.
I had some time to dither, and
Sat down by the big white oaks.
For a while I was bitter, and
This is what I wrote.

Daddy I’m gonna take my time.
Momma told me, I get mine.
Forgiving you means I understand,
What it takes to love this man.

Sisters, don’t you walk in blind.
Momma told me I’d get mine.
Her revenge means that I’ve now lived.
The joy and heartbreak of raising kids.

Lord, took me down in the river.
Oh, what a path I’d hoed
Took me deep as a sinner, and
As a sinner I arose.
Reborn in the river,
At the end of the Sunburnt Road

I was born in the river.
I was born in the river.
Reborn a sinner,
At the end of the Sunburnt Road.
And as a sinner, I’m called home.
As a sinner, As a sinner.
This sinner’s comin’ home.
I’m called home… I’m called home… I’m called home!
